Across the world, citizens are facing the deterioration of their living conditions, as well as that of public services – health, education, homes for the elderly, pension systems, security… While governments are urging citizens to do more, the concentration of wealth at the top of the pyramid has accelerated. Since 2020, the top 1% have captured nearly two-thirds of wealth, six times the share of the poorest 90% of humanity, according to Oxfam.

While some multinationals have benefitted from the pandemic and the war in Ukraine, and made historical windfall profits, many governments are targeting the most vulnerable and the middle classes with austerity plans. This situation fuels frustration and anger towards public authorities, which undermines democracy. Everywhere, political parties, challenging individual and public freedoms in favor of the hierarchy of citizens and xenophobia, are gaining ground at the polls.

To break this vicious circle, States must be given the means to finance public services capable of meeting the needs of everyone, and first and foremost of the most vulnerable, to leave less room for this anti-democratic hostility, through, in particular, the taxation of profits and the income of the richest.
